There’s nothing quite like a shared experience to bring you and your date closer together.
And if you’re looking for a fun date, kayaking is a great activity, whether you know what you’re doing or not.
Here are some kayaking date ideas to help you create a romantic and memorable experience that you can cherish forever (hopefully).
Kayaking Date Ideas
Why Go On A Kayaking Date?
Let’s face it; kayaking is fun.
And what better way to spend time with your date than by sharing a tandem kayak and exploring the world together?
If you think tandem kayaking is a step too far, you can still experience the joy of kayaking together from your own individual kayaks.
You can discover secluded beaches, hidden coves, spectacular scenery, and lots of wildlife while spending quality time with each other.
Kayaking on a calm lake or river can be a relaxing experience. This can help you both feel more comfortable on the date, especially if it’s your first date.
You can avoid the awkward interview-like questions of most date nights and have fun spending time getting to know each other in a more informal setting. You can even bring your friends.
If neither of you has kayaked before, you get to learn a new skill together, which will be a unique shared experience. And if all goes well, it could become your new shared hobby.
Kayaking is a great bonding activity and usually requires teamwork. This can be a great way to get to know your date on a different level, potentially letting you form deeper and lasting connections.
However, things could go the other way, and you could learn that your date is not the right one for you.
Things To Do On A Kayaking Date
The types of things you can do on a kayaking date will vary depending on where in the country (or world) you are.
Taking a picnic lunch to a quiet, picturesque spot can be a perfect option and should be pretty easy for most people.
Pack A Picnic
I recommend always packing a picnic when you’re heading out on any outdoor date. When you’re packing food, remember to think about the kind of food that will hold up well in a cooler. Sandwiches are probably your best bet.
Don’t forget to pack plenty of water. Reusable water bottles are a great choice for trips to the beach or lake and they can usually be easily refilled.
Remember, when you’re packing drinks, it can be best to avoid alcohol unless you’re planning to kayak camp and spend a night under the stars.
In many places, alcohol is not permitted on waterways and you may not be allowed to have it on board your kayak, let alone consume it. It’s also usually illegal to operate a boat under the influence of alcohol. You don’t want your date to be ruined with a large fine or, worse: a trip to jail.
Explore Sea Caves
There are many locations around the world where you can explore stunning sea caves. In the US, popular places for kayaking around sea caves include La Jolla in California and Hawaii’s Na Pali Coast.
Check out the guide to Kayak the Na Pali Coast (this tour is only possible in the summer).
Kayaking through caves can be a unique experience and one that’s best shared with your other half. You’ll also usually get to see various marine life on this type of ocean kayaking trip.

Embark On A Sunset Kayak Tour
Sunset has long been considered a romantic time of day, which is why many people propose or get married at this time of day.
Heading off on a romantic sunset kayaking tour can be a fantastic date idea. You and your date can experience tranquil waters under the glow of the setting sun almost anywhere.
Many kayak tour companies across the US and around the world offer guided sunset tours, some with remote beach picnics included.
Witness Bioluminescence On An Evening Kayaking Tour
Bioluminescence is one of the spectacles of nature and can be best experienced from a kayak, making it a perfect choice for a date night.
There are many places around the world where you can witness bioluminescence but, in my opinion, the best place in the world to go bioluminescence kayaking is in Florida.
Central Florida’s Space Coast is the best place to go bioluminescent kayaking. There are several tour operators in the area.

What To Wear For A Kayaking Adventure
If you’re heading out in the summer when it’s warm, you might find that swimwear is your best bet. However, you might want to pack a few layers just in case. If the water is cold, you might need a wetsuit.
Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. Quick-drying sportswear can be a great option. You may want to wear a rash guard under your life jacket to prevent chafing.
Don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray for your adventures in the great outdoors. It’s also a good idea to bring some first aid supplies, just in case.
I recommend packing a change of clothes in a dry bag so you can put dry clothes on after your water adventure.

Best Time To Go On A Kayaking Date
In terms of seasons, summer can be the best time of year to take your date kayaking. There are more hours of daylight and it’s warmer in the summer.
In terms of times of the day to go kayaking, the most romantic time is often sunset. In many places, you’ll find kayak outfitters offering sunset tours where you can watch the magic of the sunset surrounded by water.
Early morning can also be ideal, with the twilight skies adding a romantic atmosphere to any paddling spot.
Paddling under a full moon can be a pretty romantic experience. Some kayaking companies may offer full moon kayak tours in certain locations.
